January 2019

Here’s to a Big 2019!

“Is anything too difficult for the Lord?” (Gen. 18:14)

Happy New Year! As we kick off 2019, my prayer for our fellowship is that we will begin to realize and embrace all that God has in store for us, both as a church and as individuals. But, to do that, we will need to take the first crucial steps of getting ourselves aligned with God’s way of thinking.   Last Sunday, we looked at six things that we could do on a daily basis to grow in our relationship with the Lord. For many of us, it will require a rearrangement of priorities, and an intentional effort, but the results will be out of this world! God is waiting for us to take our relationship with Him seriously, and keeping these “New Year Resolutions” will help us keep God – His plan, His will, and His way – at the forefront of our thoughts and actions this year.

I challenge you to join me in daily committing ourselves to:

(1) Daily Prayer – commit to spending time alone with God in prayer – talking and listening

(2) Daily Praise – remember who God is, and give Him the praise and worship He is due

(3) Daily Bible Reading and Meditation – spend time in the Word, listening for His message to you

(4) Daily Crucifixion – die to yourself – selfishness, ambition, independence – so you can grow in Christ

(5) Daily Encouraging – be an encourager! Find someone to share a good word with.

(6) Daily Service – understand that Christianity is a verb! We are to look for others to minister to.

When you do these things, you will find that it will be easier to hear God in your life, and to really connect with Him as He shares His plans for you, in this year and beyond! God is waiting for you to listen when He talks, and to be trusting and obedient as He leads.
Another thing that working on these goals will do is help you to grasp the magnitude of our God! The passage above is part of the story of the birth of Isaac, when God told Abraham and Sarah that they would have a child in their old age. When Sarah laughed, God challenged her. It was a big promise, made by a really big God.   Too often, we dream small, expect small, and pray small. We try to confine God to little things, incremental things – things well beneath his glory. I think God is challenging us, in 2019, to begin praying, dreaming and expecting BIG! Let’s to that, together as a church. Let’s ask God what He has for us this year, and really listen as He talks. Then, let’s step out in big faith, and watch what God does with it!
